Goodbye Hokkaido – Emi

Written by Emi on Aug 13th, 2008 and posted in 2008, On the Road

Hokkaido: three words…Wind, sunshine and laughter.

As I awoke this morning, the last day we are to spend on this wonderful island, I am torn between feeling like this journey has hardly begun and a sense of familiarity and comfort that usually takes years to develop.

From our uncertain “false” starts in Wakkanai to the slew of amazing and inspirational people we have met on the road, the crazy headwinds and the deliriously fast downhills, the stunning ocean views and beautiful mountain top vistas, Hokkaido has been a TRIP!

I have to say though, that the most rewarding part of the journey thus far has been the laughs.  Whether it was shared with the generous souls in Wakkanai (the Bikers of Midori-yu, Kura-san, Furukawa-san, Hyugaji-san), the inspirational cyclists we’ve met on the road (Daniela from Montreal, the Swiss couple working their way around the globe, and our dear friend Chetan), or with each other, the laughs have worked my abs harder than Nicholas’s infamous 8 minute ab sessions.  I can only begin to imagine how many more of these moments will unfold as we continue pedaling our way across the next three islands!

Bring on the sweat, bring on the roads, HERE COMES THE SUN!
