Forced out.
Written by Ashley on Jun 6th, 2009 and posted in 2009, TrainingI’ve had a bit more training for the cross country ride than usual this, my first week being car-less. The safety certification recently expired on my car, leaving me to dive head first into an all-biking lifestyle, ready or not. I ride to all five of my elementary schools (a different one each day) sometime around 7:45 am and am more awake than I’ve ever been at the beginning of the work day. It’s actually quite nice.
Despite having to dash out of my house, almost late and only downing half my cup of coffee as I struggle to adjust to leaving earlier, AND having to bring my work clothes in my bag incase it decides to rain as I pedal to work, I really like the cool breeze, calmness, and sounds of the morning. I realized I’ve been missing some of the best stuff around me as I sped to school in my little metal container of a car these past two years.
I can’t say I often chose to bike when I had the options of driving, a later morning departure and a shield from the rain, but now that I’ve been forced out…just me and the pedals and a breeze, I wouldn’t have it any other way. There’s so much to take in with your eyes, ears and nose… I can’t help but smile as I go, even when it rains! As I see the cars drive by, I kind of feel like I’m lucky one. How wierd is that?

Hi Ash! Nice article. I remember some similar comments made by Dad when we were living in Japan 20 years ago . . . and he did a lot of walking to work and around Otsuka’s. The images and memories I have of my times living in Japan are much clearer as well, from the times I walked more than rode trains. Yah, the sights, sounds, and smells are all more vivid! Good for you, taking on this challenge of the “long ride”. Sure you will learn and experience much that you haven’t even put on your radar yet., So proud of you! Love, Mom
Dear Ash
so nice to read about your experience in “riding Japan”. It makes me want to go there and enjoy the simplicity and depth of your experiences. Well, I can live them through you.
I saw a picture of you and I really admire your guts and will to do new things. Simple things at first but really things to show the woman you are. Looking for challenges and showing how healthy you are on looking for these experiences. Marathon s in Hawaii and Japan and now cycling the country. You are just amazing!
hang in there girl!!
I am sure you will continue building up your personality and soul.
