Homemade toothpaste

Have you ever thought of making your own toothpaste?

Try this easy DIY recipe to make your own fluoride free toothpaste. Not only you will save money, but you will also reduce the amount of plastic waste and avoid all the additives in most store-bought toothpastes.

 All you need is:

½ cup of baking soda (the magic of baking soda and it’s million of uses!)

¼ cup of hydrogen peroxide (the Japanese name is Oxidol—3%, and you can find it in most drug stores, not recommmended if you have silver fillings)

Mix the ingredients until you get a paste. And that’s it! The taste is a little bit salty. You can try and add some drops of glycerin, peppermint oil or cinnamon oil to found a flavor you like.

Have fun and experiment making your own stuff!

  1. I am an admirer of BeeJapan, but regarding your toothpase recipe- floride is a highly beneficial component of personal dental care, especially for children. The opposition to floride flounts overwhelming and unequivocal scientific evidence.

  2. Sorry to jump in but I have to respectfully disagree with David,
I became concerned about the fluoride issue a few months back after watching a documentary on health problems related to the element. From there I did a bit of research, which I’ve been meaning to put on the BEE World Links page but have been a bit behind on with planning this years ride.
There are detailed articles discussing the side-effects of having fluoride in public drinking water (as in my native US).
http://www.fluorideresearch.org is a non-biased group that makes regular publications based on these issues, and the results are usually that fluoride has adverse effects on the people who drink it.
http://www.fluoridealert.org/ is an awareness group that hopes to get fluoride out of the drinking supply because of the health risks associated with fluoride, primarily children as their immune systems are still developing.

I guess what it comes down to for me, is that maybe fluoride helps our teeth (and I’d like to see the research for that because humans functioned just fine without it up until the middle of this century) but shouldn’t it be a person’s choice whether they drink it in the water everyday? Why not just put it in the toothpaste and let people make their own decisions about if they want to expose their bodies to other possible health risks? I personally choose non-fluoride toothpaste, and once my current tube of Dr. Toms I’m using now runs out I’m using Rocio’s recipe.

If David or anyone else has information to the contrary, please share your sources with us so we can all learn more from each other. I’m just hoping everyone can make the most well-informed conclusions on their own, and having open info and communication will best help us all :-)
