5 Things We Live By
Written by Ashley on Sep 14th, 2009 and posted in PersonalSeeing as I only found out some of the teams main goals and rules to live by on the road AFTER I showed up for the start in Hokkaido, I thought some of you might not so clear on them either (unless ofcourse you’ve attended one of our events). So here they are, the guidlines of life on tour across country with the BEE team 2009:
1.) Travel by bicycle they produce no CO2, are good for your body, and promote healthy communities as you can interact with your surroundings and other people while you ride
2.) Reduce waste through two avenues, ONE -organizing clean-ups and volunteering at events to help divide and dispose of recycleable stuff and garbage properly and TWO produce less waste in daily life by not using one-time use items and choosing products sold with less packaging material. (we also don’t use vending machines which make garbage afer each drink and are kept in 24hr energy using machines)
3.) Eat vegetarian because rasing meat takes a far greater amount of energy than vegetables (1kg of potatoes takes 500 liters of water to grow while 1kg of beef takes an average of 100,000 liters of water to produce) and no fish because the current rate of fishing is far beyong sustainable.
4.) Buy local and organic food it produces less CO2 if it was grown near by, supports the local community, and the organic stuff is better for our bodies and the environment.
5.) Buy Fair Trade when local and organic items aren’t available. While Fair Trade products are often produced in developing countries and therefore produce CO2 in being exported to Japan, they help support a healthy international social envronment by acknowledging products that have aid the workers fairly for their labor, invested in the commnity and upkeep te natural environment and diversity in the area where the product was grown.

Great summary!!
