Hiroshima
Written by Rocio on Sep 28th, 2009 and posted in 2009After a few days camping, we arrived in Hiroshima where we were hosted by Paul and Joy, a couple full of energy who ran a triathlon on the day prior to our arrival, and their two lovely children, Felix and Niya in a spacious house they reformed a few years ago.
Bike Ride and beach clean up in Miyajima Island on the National no-car day: We met up at the A-Bomb dome in the Memorial Park and Joy led us to Miyajima Island for a beach clean up. Despite of the rain, Doi, Manuez and Yuji joined us for the quick ride to Miyajima. Much of the trash we collected was styrofoam-the little bids were way too difficult to collect-, and small tubes which are used as separators in oyster farming, oyster being a speciality in the area. While we were cleaning, some of the deers who were wandering around, snuck in our panniers and tried to look for some food. After the clean up and in spite of the big crowds of tourists due to the national holiday, Joy got us a table in the many okonomiyaki-Japanese pancake- restaurants in town.
Back to Hiroshima city, some of us went to the worth-visiting Peace Memorial Museum, before meeting again for dinner in a bar where we kind of improvised a Trivia game to try to fundraise money for our beneficiaries with questions about our ride and environmental issues. We started approaching the tables and talking to the customers about our ride and our goals and for the most part we had a rather positive response and most of them played the game and managed to raised some money.
On the following day, we left to Yamaguchi in company of Yugisan, who we met in our first day in Hiroshima.Yuji resides in Osaka and he is touring in the southern part of Japan, and since we were heading in the same direction, he joined and rode with us for 2 days after what we split to pursue our respective routes.
