Bicycle for Everyone’s Earth

Amiena

Hi! My name is Amiena, and I am an avid cyclist, educator, and traveler. I am just wrapping up my three year stint in Fukui, Japan, a small city on the Sea of Japan, where I teach English in an academic high school. When I am not teaching, I am out cycling on country roads in Fukui, climbing mountains, or doing yoga. Prior to living in Japan, I taught English at a high school in my hometown of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA. I have traveled to 17 countries, most recently to Thailand and Laos. While I enjoy most outdoor activities, particularly hiking and camping, cycling remains my favorite. I am participating in the 2008 BEE Ride in order to explore the sustainable living options the team adheres to, particularly vegetarianism and alternative transportation. I want to know how I can live a kind of lifestyle that will make the smallest possible footprint, and I think the BEE Ride can help me begin to achieve that.

Woo! We finally made it to Wakkanai, the starting point for our 3500 kilometer tour. Emi, Nicholas, Colin, Fan and I met in Fukui for some pre-ride planning and trouble-shooting before riding a ferry for 19 hours from Tsuruga to Tomakomai ferry port. From the ferry port, we rode 30 kilometers to Tomakomai City, where we stayed [...]

BEE Rider gets smoked by a 90 year-old on a battery-powered bike

By Amiena • Jun 24th, 2008 • Category: 2008, Green Living

It happened just this morning. I was cycling up my favorite mountain when I heard a sound behind me. I checked my mirror and instead of a motorbike, I saw an elderly gentleman on a battery-powered bicycle. A few seconds later, he passed me, his little arthritic legs slowly pumping up and down. Thirty seconds [...]

Along the ridge of a mountain range that lays between Fukui City and the Echizen Coast sit a series of windmills that can be seen from the city on clear days. On Saturday, I went for a hill climb training ride with my two cycling partners, Kobayashi-san and Takashima-san to prepare for some of the mountain [...]
